My Rainbow Room/Color Cave: Update 05

Greetings Color Kids!
I know it's been a while since I last blogged, but a lot has been going on.

1: I think I pretty much finished my "Rainbow Room"

I still have a few boxes to make so I can box some variant dolls. I'm hoping that with the cleaned space I can start video blogging from this area and give you all updates on products and tips on collecting.

2: Brite Cast: the Rainbow Brite Podcast: had it's 1 year anniversary. I'm working on getting a new website designed and working on upgrading the video software for the video casts.

3: the RainbowBrite.Co.Uk website had a theme overhaul, and I'm still working out a few bugs trying to get the whole website up to date.
Due to some server issues I couldn't update the website in months, and have been working moving everything to a new server and getting it restored and upgraded. You have no idea how much of a pain this process was, but I'm happy it was successful.

Since it is a New Year I will try to set a few goals for the year.
1: Starting a Video Blog
2: Continue archiving
3: Refining my Rainbow Brite Costume. My shirt and boots need to be completely remade. My measurements weren't right when attempting to enlarge the costume to adult size.
4: Show off said costume at a convention! More news on that as I settle the details.

Anyway, until next time, keep the rainbow alive!
Have a Rainbow Day!

New Year's Coming!

Hey Color Kids,
I thought I would take some time to let you all know what has been up! If you visit the website...you can see that...well... NOTHING has been up for some time. *sad face*

We're sorry about that. Updates have been slow because of technical issues with the site's main server. We are working on this! It's going to take a while to get things up and running, and while we were hoping to have it done before the new year, it doesn't look like it's gonna be happening, at least not that soon. Please be calm while we make the required changes.

We do hope you all had a happy holidays! Please check out the Brite Cast Christmas Special were Katy and I wrote our own "Night Before Christmas" Rainbow Brite themed poems.

See you in the New Year!
Sorry for all the delays!

How to: Make a Rainbow Brite Style Display Box

How to make a Rainbow Brite Style doll box
Rainbow Brite Dolls in custom boxes
This is a cross post from the main website tutorial here.

Tools you will need to re-create the box
a: Utility Knife (for heavy cutting)
b: Xacto Knife (for detail cutting)
c: Ruler/yard Stick
d: pencil
e: Scoring Board (for making creases)
f: rubber gloves (to minimize the oil from your hands from over handling.)
g: glue
h: Velcro with adhesive back
i: silica packets (optional)
j: poly bags/head wraps for dolls (optional)

To re-create my Rainbow Brite Doll box, I used an old one to get the measurements and parts.

The box consisted on the following:

A: 1 Box
B: 1 Cardboard insert
C: 3 Lengths of plastic coated wire.
D: 1 clear plastic window (9 ½ in x 6 ½ in)

To make each box, I need a hard template/stencil to re-use as I need a new box. I decided to buy some foam core board from my local hobby shop for this.

I clamped the old box down flat onto the foam core board and traced the old box onto the surface. The clamps keep the box from moving as I go around with my pencil. Include the center/window of the box as well. Once done I remove the old box and use a box cutter/utility knife to cut out the shape. It is best to use the Xacto Knife for the window, as you need to be detailed with the curve of the shape if you intend to duplicate the same curve.

If you do not have an old box to make your template from, you will find measurements below for what I used.
Insert Measurements (Click to enlarge)
Box Measurements (click to enlarge)

Now lets start making your box.
You need the following:

A: Heavy Poster Board (minimum 18 3/8 in x 18 3/8 in is needed for each box)
B: ¼ sheet cake board (or 10 x 11 6/8 in corrugated card board)
C: Spool of clear plastic coated wire (9 ½ inch lengths are used to mount doll)
D: Transparency Sheets

The box itself is made out of a thick poster board I got from an office supply store. Chip board is too thick, and regular poster board is too thin. The heavy poster board is the closest to the real box weight I was able to locate. You can make one box per sheet of poster board.

To create your box, clip the template to the poster board. I find putting it next to the corner of the paper will assure you get a straight and even line for two sides of your board.

After you have traced the outline, un-clip the template, and use a yard stick and the utility knife to get a straight cut around the other sides of the outline, so you have a rectangle. The other parts of the box are triangles, so use a ruler to assure those straight cuts, and finish cutting away the other negative areas of your outline.

Now that you have your box shape cut, you need to make the creases. The best tool for this is a “Scoring Board”. Martha Stewart has a nice large one available at most craft stores.

To score your box, lay the box on the scoring board, and using it's tool, press firmly and follow the groove from one end of the box to the other. Do that for all areas that need to be creased. This includes the folds at the top and sides (see picture)

When you make a crease it will darken the area but this will not be visible when you fold the box.

Next cut the window out of the center of the box if you haven’t done so already, and the extra cut in the closing flaps. You should know where this is now that you have made your creases.

Next you will need to glue down your window. The transparency sheet is too wide to fit as it is, so you will need to cut off the extra width. Once cut in to the correct size, draw a line of glue around the inner window of the box about a half inch. Once it's done, place the clear transparency film down over the window. Press down on the glue trail, and move your finger out away from window. This will spread the glue out and make sure it lays flat.

Lay the box down and let the glue dry.

After it has dried, fold the box on the crease you created until it meets the end. Draw a line of glue along the end and use a pair of clips to clamp the two pieces together. Make sure the seam is flat and the glue is not leaking out the cracks. You can better assure the seam if you used two rulers on either side of the board and clamp that down so that it's being held down from one end of the box to the other.

If you don't do this, you just need to hold down the seam by hand until it sticks enough on it's own and the clamps on the ends will keep it from coming apart.

While this is drying, you can work on the insert.

The insert for the box was originally a colored piece of very thin cardboard, but I wasn't able to duplicate this. Instead I used ¼ sheet cake boards. It is the correct width. You will need to trim off the extra length from the top.

Next comes the detail cutting for the insert. To assure the proper folds to fit in the box you will need to make a series of cuts in the back of the board (the brown part). Only two have to go all the way through the board. The others are only for the folds, so only have to be through the brown part.

You also need to punch a few holes through the cardboard too. These holes are what the wire goes through to mount the doll.

Depending on what doll you are mounting you may need more then two. All of the box inserts will need to hold the doll body. You will need extra parts to hold hair. For example the one I am working with is for “Rainbow Brite”, and in addition to holding her to the board, I also need a wire and holes to hold back her ponytail. Also, if your doll has a sprite, you may need to punch a set of holes to mount the sprite.

After all boards are cut and the box is dried, it's time to put the box together.

Fold in the flaps of the box and secure the box with Velcro. This way you can open the box later to adjust or add items as you find them.

Next cut wire, 9 ½ to 10 inch lengths.

Before mounting your dolls you may want to adjust their hair and wrap them. If you do this, you can use 4 – 5 inch poly backs cut into 2 inch rings to wrap around their heads and keep their bangs down.

Once you know your doll is ready, put the wire under the dress and out the sleeves. Feed the wire around the back of the doll and into the holes you punched in the center of the board. Turn the board and doll over and twist the wire firmly. When you turn the board back over the doll is now firmly mounted in the middle of the board.

Next, use another length of wire to secure the doll's hair if it needs it the same as you secured the body of the doll.

Now, secure the doll's sprite if available.

Lastly, slide the cardboard insert with mounted doll into the box.
Rainbow Brite and Twink reboxed!
Secure the other end of the box with Velcro. Add a silica packet if you like to keep away moisture, and you are done.

Yay for updates and art!

Hey Color Kids,
The second episode of the Brite Cast was posted this week. I hope you all are enjoying it. In the meantime I am trying to complete some life milestones. I am still in the process of moving, so things are still slow. However we don't want your waiting to be for naught. In addition to the Brite Cast episode 2 we also posted a NEW press kit to the Rainbow Brite archive.

This press kit is from the FIRST TV specials and features information about Peril in the Pits and the Mighty Monstromurk Menace! Enjoy!

We are still updating Wiki*Brite with new information as well that we discovered from our library research.

Sadly I seem to have miss placed by tablet pen while packing and I need to get some new character drawings done. I've ordered a new pen just in case, which should be delivered in a few days and then perhaps I can work on some more sketches. I hope you like the drawings I've done so far for the site. Here are some samples of what I have done:
Wizard from "Murky's Comet"
The King of Shadows from Beginning of Rainbow Land
Fun fact: The Wizard in Murky's Comet looks like Mickey Mouse in the Sorcerer's Apprentice, am I right?!

Don't forget to tune in to Brite Cast, and if there are any thing you would like to share or anything you think would make the website fun, please feel free to contact me. Leave me a comment here or use the comment page on the website!
Take care and Have a Rainbow Day!!!

Rainbow Research Advice 101: The Library

Hey Color Kids!
When I decided to help with the Rainbow Brite website, I knew that what I wanted was the find out all the Rainbow Brite mysteries and create a reliable source of information fans could depend on. From writing to individuals involved with tiny details about the products, the television show and more I knew it would be worth it to uncover and find new rainbows to share with others.

The websites most recent acquisition of information has uncovered so many  new rainbows we are in a virtual color cave of color crystals about the burst! But if you are going to create a website about a subject it DOES take a lot of work. But in the end it is worth it for everyone who is helped or made happy by the information that is found.

I want to give anyone who is thinking about researching their own subjects a new resource they probably didn't know was there. This resource is the Library. At your own local library you can use their newspaper archive to find original advertisements and announcements to tons of 80's properties. However one library is very important and special. That would be the Margaret Herrick Library, which is a part of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. You  may have heard of them. They do the Oscars.

The Margaret Herrick Library is located in Beverly Hills, California and archives nearly anything in movies and tv. It was here we learned of the "Howard R Cohen Papers".  Howard R Cohen is the writer of many of the later Rainbow Brite specials, tv show and film. Many of his papers were given to the library and are in the "Special" Collections section of the library. Being part of the "Special" collections, we had to ask permission to review their resources. The notes from the collection included details such as dates and character descriptions and story outlines. We cannot reproduce the information exactly due to copyrights, but the information will be summarized,  listed and the source cited on articles where the information is used.

For example: Some of the information we uncovered was a cast list for one of the Rainbow Brite Episodes which uncovered the actress chosen to play Moonglow and Tickled Pink. This ended up being Rhonda Aldrich who played the Evil Princess in the feature film.

Your local library will have a section for their news papers on film. I recommend holiday papers (November/December) for those researching toys or other kids properties. For those who want to more in depth research in to film or TV Media please check out the Margaret Herrick Library. Please be sure to review their hours and on site rules when requesting or visiting to assure a pleasant and productive visit.

A special thanks to the Margaret Herrick Library and their wonderful staff for allowing us to research the Rainbow Brite information. The information disclosed in this article is part of the Howard R Cohen Papers Special Collection located at the Margaret Herrick Library.

Note: Special Collections access is given for research purposes only, copies of the information is not permitted for private collections. Full copies of scripts are not permitted due to copyrights and all of the information was researched from the above mentioned collection but was not quoted or copied directly from it.

Chasing Rainbows

Hey Color Kids,
I've had a few people ask how it is I got involved with RainbowBrite.Co.Uk since I'm not British. I hadn't realized I hadn't really spoken about it, so I thought I would now in case there were others who wanted to know.

It starts back to when I was like everyone else. I was a fan just on the Internet looking to find out as much as I could about Rainbow Brite. Back then I only knew what I had as a child and I didn't know the details. I discovered there was so much I didn't know about the stories and with every question I found an answer to I had even more. I used to even write Fan Fiction! But in my fiction my details were wrong.

I didn't think much of it at first. I had planned on making my own "Rainbow" themed site a long time ago but didn't. I gathered all my research and let it sit on old hard floppy discs for years.

I did get involved with the Rainbow Brite audio tape project a while back, voicing Twink Sprite, but didn't get involved beyond that since I moved and didn't have Internet from 2006 - 2008.

Then I got the urge to find the Rainbow again in 2008. I started to talk to old friends online and wanted to discuss Rainbow Brite, and decided if we were going to find out more about the brand we loved we should just do it ourselves.

We started with a basic layout and we each had different tasks. Some worked on the forums, others on website, and research. Over the years others have dropped out but of those of us who are around still, we try to keep things fun.

I took much of the website and research a little while back, being in the United States and having access to a lot of facts others didn't. That and I LOVE research. I love chasing rainbows and it seems that is all I do these days! Who voiced Twink on the records? Who voiced Tickled Pink and Moonglow in the show? What is the real spelling of Moonglow's and other character's names? When was Rainbow Brite a Special Guest on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? Found all of that out and more.

It takes a lot of patience. Some letters I send out don't get replies for YEARS, but when they do, the site is the first to know! And when the site knows, that means YOU know!

For everyone who loves Rainbow Brite and finds the website, the Wiki, and videos fun...you are what make the job worth while. We don't get paid for what we do, and any donations we get go straight to research and facts for YOU!

We hope you enjoy and tune in for more! If  you have anything you would like to contribute, or are curious about just let us know! Send us your messages on the "contact" page of the website.

Until the next entry we hope you Have a Rainbow Day!

Blast from the Past

Today's April's fools day prank was a cleaver one by mister Murky! He took the www.rainbowbrite.co.uk website and took it back to the past! Replicating the original website from the 1990's that advertised the Rainbow Brite re-release. We hope you all enjoyed it, and for those who didn't see it, you can see a screen grab below!

Color Me Happy

Hello fans,
I decided to share a bit of fan art with you all.

Color Kid Renee'
As you know from my previous post I am wanting to organize a podcast with another Rainbow Brite website. As part of organizing the cast I decided to draw myself and my co-host as Color Kids! Using a basic Color Kid design referencing a lot of color kids photos, I came up with the picture on the right.

This is me as a color kid based on myself at the age of 5. I used the below photos as references for the drawing.

Both photos contain my favorite shirt! A "rainbow" shirt that I adored. The colors wrapped around me and I felt like Rainbow Brite. I duplicated the shirt's pattern on my own color kids.
The hair and eyes are arranged like the other photo in which my bangs where slightly wind blown, and my eyes wide.

The drawing was drawn digitally with a PC tablet and Fireworks. I drew each part as it's own layer so that it could be changed without harming other layers. So the shirt is a layer, the jeans, shoes, hair, etc.

So, do you think it looks like me? Do you like it? Would you like to see yourself as a color kid? Let me know!

Have a Rainbow Day!

New Year Ideas

In 2013 it marks a special time for Rainbow Brite, as it is her 30th anniversary!

What do we have in store for everyone in the new year?

From Hallmark: in December you can expect a new Rainbow Brite Ornament! It's already been seen at New York Comic Con, as well as others special showings.

What can you expect from the Co.Uk website?
So far we have updated you with two new doll catalogs, added an interview or two, and freshened up some old sound files but updates may be even slower as we attempt new ventures.

One of our hopes is to start a new Podcast as a joint venture with RainbowBrite.Net! Hopefully this will help both websites in keeping up with events and information in a fun and entertaining way for you!

Brite Cast Mock Cassette
Also, I'm hoping to add some more information in regards to collecting here. I hope to catalog the website collection soon, and perhaps unearth some new rainbows for you!

Until then, keep an eye on RainbowBrite.Co.Uk, our Facebook Page, Twitter, and blog!

The Collector

As a child you never really consider yourself a "Collector". At those ages you know there is something you like and you like having those things around you. I kept a lot of my Rainbow Brite collection as I grew, though to be honest I didn't own a lot as a child. My childhood collection was pretty much the following:

I had all the 18" Dolls. Rainbow Brite, Patty O'Green, and Shy Violet. I also had the Baby Brite doll, though I guess she is considered 15",
I had several other plush toys. Starlite, Puppy Brite, and Twink Sprite.

Miscellaneous items I also had.
  • Rainbow Brite bath set with boat soap dish
  • Rainbow Brite Baton  and pom pom set
  • Stickers
  • Puzzles
  • Coloring Books
  • Story Books with Tapes
  • Rainbow Brite Bike
  • Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer Comic
  • Rainbow Brite Tapes: Peril in the Pits, Beginning of Rainbow Land  and Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer
  • Paint a Rainbow In Your Heart Record

A lot of the the collection was lost during the many moves of my childhood though I still have some of it left.

When I got older I discovered all these other toys that I didn't have as a child that I could now afford as an adult. It was then that I became a "Collector".

When you become a collector you  start with something that connects to a special moment or memory add to that collection and embellish upon it with more of what you like. But as a collector, where do you begin?

The advice I have to someone who wants to become a collector is to decide on the parts of the collection you love and look for those things. Some people love plush dolls, figures or photos. It's best to concentrate on one thing you like and go after that. You don't really realize how MUCH there really is out there until you look.

Rainbow Brite was printed on clothing, books, toys, and more. The brand was released in the United States, Mexico, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Spain, Argentina and more! That is a LOT of stuff to collect or consider collecting. Rather then set out to collect everything, start with one thing/category and go from there. You need to make a plan.

For example: Dolls.

I had the 18" dolls but I didn't have the small dolls. So I started looking there. At the time that I started collecting which was in the late 90's there wasn't much known about the dolls. Since collecting became more popular more "variants" appeared, and as those variants became more common, some became more sought after then others (example: Star Shoes/Red bottom, Etc). We will go over "variants" in a later post.

There are 8 main regular dolls and 3 known dress up dolls. You have every doll for every color and Rainbow Brite, as well as a dress up Rainbow Brite,  Tickled Pink, and Moonglow. You also have the small parts that are more rare that get lost through the years. Mostly these are the removable parts that people didn't keep or fell off. The Hand Sprites are usually the first to disappear. They were the largest part and were meant to come off. You can usually find the doll before you will find the sprite and they can sell for over $5 a piece.

Make a list of the parts you want or need, and keep track of those on Ebay or in  second hand/thrift stores.
If you really cannot locate one item, you may need to look into making the missing item.

If an original part is what you want be prepared to pay more for it. If you don't mind it not being the original part, then you have more options.

One thing I do not recommend is buying the dolls individually if you don't have to. Buy lots. The larger the lot, the more pieces you get for a lower price. Any piece you get a duplicate of can be sold off again later.

For example: a Rainbow Brite, Red Butler, or Patty O'Green doll usually sells for $10 each, but a Buddy Blue or Indigo will sell for $40. If I buy a lot that has Rainbow, Red, Patty, Indigo, and Buddy with their hand sprites for $125, I can sell off the parts I don't need and I bought the item I did need and made the money back.

Sadly a lot of sellers know this trick too and will buy big lots just to profit on a fan. Still, while it is a risk, you have to figure if it's worth it to you.

I personally just bought the last of my doll collection, which was Dress Up Moonglow. She is one of the most rare because she was created but only released in a foreign market. I paid over $150 for her, but it took me years to find one in as good enough condition, and for a price I was willing to pay. Apart from not being in her original box, she is very pretty and perfect condition with her original dress, boots and hair ribbon. All those pieces add to her value and her place in my collection now marks it as a complete doll collection.

Figure how much something is worth to you and spend that. It takes a lot of research. So we wish you luck!
Happy Collecting!

Rainbow Brite and Me
Greetings Rainbow Brite fan's.
My name is Renee' Stowe and I am one of the admins and friends of the Rainbow Brite.Co.Uk Fan Community. I mostly maintain the United States based Rainbow Brite information and collectibles for the website as well as help with promotions.

So, where will  you have noticed me recently? August of 2012 I was able to meet one of the Rainbow Brite voice cast members: Bettina Bush.

Bettina was in Orlando Florida at a function and I was lucky enough to get a few minutes with her to say hello, share the appreciation of the Rainbow Brite fandom and get some nice things to give away to fans! That means YOU!

You all can look forward to seeing some CD Singles as well as a signed "Rainbow Brite" Mini Backpack being given away very soon!

All items will be given away for free, but to get them you have to make sure to follow the Rainbow Brite.co.uk community! We have a Twitter, Facebook and YouTube channel!

The current promotion on the website is a Twink mini backpack give away which still has a few weeks left, so if you haven't joined in the fun, run over to the Facebook page for details!

As for myself, I'm going to be starting up a Rainbow Brite blog here and posting reviews and comments that may help you on the website.

I really look forward to sharing the Rainbow with you and hopefully we can be friends!
